With the pending frosts looming over our shoulders we spent the past week harvesting our winter storage crops to save them from frost damage. A marathon harvest that started two Saturdays ago kept us going all week starting with celeriac, kohlrabi, beets, cabbage and finally ending with the carrots that we finished up as icicles were literally forming on the bins. Thousands of pounds of nourishing vegetables stored away in our cooler, so many that you can no longer walk inside. Instead you are faced with a barricade of heaping bins of vegetables that will feed us through the winter. It is a good sight to see so much food. We were amazed by the yields this year and wondered: Where are we going to put all this? We some how managed to fit most of it in our small 8x8ft cooler with double stacked heaping pallet bins which we built to save on space.
The increased harvest this season has allowed us to increase the size of our Winter CSA. Last year we had about 34 families and this year we will be doubling our numbers to around 60 families. It is fun to see the snowball effect take place as more people hear about our farm. If any of you have not confirmed that you will be joining us for the Winter, do so this week as we are getting close to our capacity.
Today’s pick-up marks the second to last week of the Summer CSA. We will be taking a month break in December and then we will be back in January for the start of the Winter season. We want to make sure that you are all well fed during the December break, so we will be doing special orders for any of you who would like to stock up on extra vegetables next week. On the front of this week’s newsletter we have the vegetables that are available and pricing. Please let us know what you would like to purchase by next Sunday, Nov. 23rd, and we will bring your extra vegetables to the final pick-up next week. We will also be doing a mid December special order day again on Tuesday, Dec. 16th (please contact us with your order by Sunday, Dec. 14th).
